Caution Regarding Severe Cold Weather in FBCESD 7

January 20, 2022 10:13 pm

Fort Bend County Emergency Services District No. 7 (FBCESD 7) is monitoring a blast of very cold air moving through the area today. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures will drop to near freezing across the entire region. Rainfall is also possible.

Overnight and into Friday morning, temperatures in Fort Bend County will be in the low 30s with wind chill values in the twenties. The primary risk will come from exposure to temperatures at or below freezing, especially if traveling into north Harris County.

Residents should take measures to protect people, plants and pets. Dress in warm, layered clothing if you plan to be outside.

Freezing rain, sleet or even snow is unlikely inside Fort Bend County. Ice on bridges and freeway flyovers is possible and residents should monitor road conditions at Houston TranStar Map.

Temperatures will warm to the low 40s by early Friday morning. Additional cold weather is expected again Friday evening into Saturday morning.

Additionally, there are a few vehicle-safety tips to observe during winter weather:

  • Keep vehicle gas tanks full
  • Have tire pressures checked
  • Keep a phone charger, first aid kit, blankets, and jumper cables in personal vehicles
  • Check local road conditions at www.houstontranstar.org. State highway information is also available at www.drivetexas.org.

Lastly, here are some safety tips recommended by FBCESD 7 regarding space heaters and other supplemental heating sources:

  • Never leave a space heater unattended, or a child unattended with a space heater
  • Keep all combustible materials (and people) at least three (3) feet away from space heaters
  • Never overload outlets or breakers
  • Do not power space heaters with extension cords or power strips; do not use power strips or extension cords as an alternative for permanent wiring
  • Always turn off space heaters when leaving the room and/or going to sleep
